Contrario a lo que se difunde en los medios, las camas de la villa olímpica no fueron fabricadas con cartón para evitar contagios de coronavirus entre los competidores. En realidad, la propuesta fue planteada mucho antes de que el covid-19 llegara a nuestras vidas.
El objetivo de utilizar este material no es otro más que el ecológico. El comité organizador de Tokio 2020 planteó el uso de materiales reciclables y energías renovables con la finalidad de promover la sostenibilidad ambiental, pues, una vez concluida la competencia, las camas serán recicladas y transformadas en diferentes productos, en lugar de ser desechadas. En definitiva, las camas de la villa olímpica han capturado la atención de todos los medios, aunque por motivos diferentes a su propósito original. Aun así, es un hecho que la mirada del mundo está sobre los materiales reciclables.

El cartón como material primario
Sin embargo, esta no es la primera ocasión en que se utiliza el cartón corrugado para fabricar muebles. Ya en los Juegos Panamericanos de Guadalajara 2011, la empresa mexicana e3Display diseñó varios muebles hechos con cartón corrugado. Tras el colapso de los hospitales provocado por la pandemia de covid-19, esta misma empresa desarrolló un modelo de cama para hospital fabricada con cartón corrugado. Ambos diseños, tanto el de Airwave (que hizo las camas para las Olimpiadas) como el de e3Display son sumamente resistentes, pues soportan más de 200 y 300 kilogramos respectivamente, al mismo tiempo que cumplen su función ecológica.

No cabe duda de que el cartón corrugado y los materiales reciclables son el futuro para la fabricación de muebles, displays e, incluso, de casas. Hoy dia podemos diseñar y fabricar todo lo que imaginemos, pues no hay límites para el uso del cartón corrugado.
